Marketing class works to create official Gonzaga Tartan | Business
Gonzaga is adding a new symbol to its legacy and wants your help making the final decision. The University is creating an official tartan for the school, and the Spring Marketing 490 class is heading the project. The class has created three tartan options and is asking students, alumni and the community at large to vote for the final design.
The school was initially contacted by Collegiate Tartan Apparel about the prospect of creating a Gonzaga Tartan and the athletic department invited to the Marketing 490 class to spearhead the project.
Students are responsible for each stage of launching the tartan, from initial research to the final step of placing GU Tartan merchandise in stores. In the past, the class has worked with Honda on a national ad campaign competition, but Veronica Atkinson, the Public Relations Coordinator for the class, said this year they were able to shake things up and serve the University itself.
The Lines of Legacy team worked closely with Collegiate Tartan to research and design the three finalist tartans that the community is voting on. Each tartan incorporates several elements representing GU’s history, legacy and values:
- Blue, white and red lines- Blue and white are Gonzaga’s official colors, and red is being used as an accent color.
- Three equal lines- The three equal lines in each design represent the University’s educational philosophy of mind, body and spirit.
- Green lines- The green lines are in honor of GU’s founder, Fr. Joseph Cataldo, an Italian Jesuit priest. They also honor the Irish Catholic families that made up the first classes at Gonzaga.
Voting on the three designs started over the weekend, and so far over 1,000 votes have been cast. While the school is enjoying Spring Break, the Lines of Legacy crew headed down to Las Vegas to gather the votes of students and alumni cheering on the Zags at the WCC Tournament.
You can cast your vote online by clicking HERE. Voting runs through the end of the week.
Atkinson said the winning tartan will be unveiled at a reveal event that’s being planned for the second week of April. Select tartan merchandise should be available for purchase by the end of the summer.
